FORMAT

The format for this year's competition will be 4 heats of 4 DJs with the winners of each heat battling it out in the final to become the Spotlight DJ champion 2007. Each DJ will play a set of 45mins with the first starting to spin his records at 9pm, and then a 15min interval before the second DJ starts at 10pm, and so on...! All 16 DJs will be judged by 3 judges using a special DJ performance criteria scoring sheet set out below.

A £5 competition entry fee is payable on the night which will contribute towards the promotion of the event in local newspaper (Blackpool Gazette's 'Big Weekend' supplement), magazine (Blackpool Spotlight Magazine), and on the local radio station (Radio Wave 96.5FM), as well as flyers and posters to be distributed around Blackpool prior and during the event.

 

VENUE

The event will be held at one of Blackpools most popular town centre bars the stylish Bar|RED. There will be drinks promotions on each night of the event.

The event is sponsored by:

West Coast Radio, who will be providing the sound set-up for the whole event as well as donating a prize to the competition winner of recording time in their brand new studio.

Club Sanuk, who will allow the winner to play a guest DJ gig at their club one Saturday night.

Klub DNA, who will be letting each of the finalists play a guest DJ gig at their venue.

 

ACCOMMODATION

For travelling DJs, a special discounted rate will be offered for accommodation in our Central Blackpool hotel/B&B, The Roslyn.

2x Technics SL 1210 MKII Turntables
Sound supplied by West Coast Radio and will include 2x Satellite Speakers with Bass Bins, Monitor Booth, and all sound is linked up to the bars house system surround speakers.

*DJs are allowed to bring and use their own equipment but must be able to hook it up either before the competition starts on the night or during the 15min interval before their set.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

Originality of Material (out of 20)
Was it creative and innovative? Was there anything different and new about their set?

Stage Presence (out of 20)
Was the DJ comfortable on stage? Did they engage the audience? Were they confident? Was there any crowd interaction?

Audience Response (out of 10)
Did they have a positive effect on the crowd? Dancing, clapping etc...but remember it's not a popularity contest!

Transition and Level Control (out of 20)
Did the set flow? Were the levels smooth between songs?

Performance Skills / Technical Ability (out of 30)
Did they mix the tunes accurately? Did they do anything special with effects, scratching, sampling, loops etc? Did it suit their set style?

Minus Penalty Points for lack of cooperation (up to 10 de-merit points if advised by bar manager/staff)
